Looks Whats Coming Home

So tonight we finished up the work on the wings and their time at Daves shop has come to an end. Soon they will be making their trip home where we can do the final prep, cover and paint. There is still a lot of work to do but I am excited to have them a few steps away and to start the long walk down the final stretch that will result in a flying airplane.

Building The Istruts

Today we started building the I Struts. But before we get to that I have a few pictures of the fuel tank in the frame.

We laid out the I strut diagram on the table and welded in some round tube pieces that held the I Strut tubes in place for welding. We then Bent the lower square tubing to the upper and lower wing profiles. These are the pieces of the I Struts that bolt to the wing spars.

Here is a pic after we welded the Streamlined tubing to the 3/4 inch square tubes. The I Struts keep the wingtips apart and form the rectangular box, along with the wings, of the biplane which is very strong.

Next we welded in the 3/4 inch tube braces.

Next, because the Streamlined tubing is wider than the 3/4s of an inch brace tubes, we needed to heat and flatten that area of the streamlined tubing to 3/4s of an inch. Below Dave is heating the area and the last picture he is using the slap hammer to flatten that area.

Saturday 1/9/10, we cut and drilled the right lower wing attach angles and bolted the attach points together. We also finished the spar caps on the top of the spars.

Locking In the Top Wing Center Section

This past Saturday, Sunday we locked in the center section ribs, put the bottom ply on and finished the last 4 wing tip ribs. We then set ribs and cut the false spars for the wing tips

Lower Left Wing is Taking Shape – Very Cool

And the lower wing ribs are done. We spent most of the morning cleaning up the lower wing ribs. Taking a plane to the outside, leveling down the gussets and any glue that dripped on the profile. Next we cleaned up the spar openings with a file and sanding plate. Once done we cut the lower spars to size and planed the spar tips for the decreasing airfoil to the tip.

Once the spars were planed and the ribs cleaned up we test fit the ribs on the spar. This was exciting because its starting to look like a wing.

Today we cranked out the lower wing #6 ribs and one of the Wolf modified #5 hinge ribs. We also cut down the front and aft lower wing spars. We have 17 more ribs to build for the lower wing. The 4 tip ribs each, both root #3 ribs, both #4 ribs, 1 modified #5 rib, and the four #7 compression ribs.
