Control System, Final Details

Sorry for lack of action on the blog, here is some catch up from May…

The last part of the control system has been the Slave Struts. The S-1-11 has Four ailerons. The stick is moved left and right, pushing and pulling tubes, through idlers and bell cranks in the lower wings which move the lower ailerons. The lower ailerons have arms that come off of the front of the aileron spars that connect to the Slave Struts which connect to the top wing’s ailerons via, you guessed it, arms that come off the front of the top aileron spars. So when the lower ailerons move they move the upper ailerons. One critical part of this besides lining it all up correctly was to get the slave struts lined up behind the I struts.

The slave struts start life as a piece of streamlined tubing, round tube and some flat steel. At the bottom of the strut is a Rod End bearing. The streamlined tubing is notched to allow the smaller tubing to be welded into it then threaded to receive the rod end. The streamlined tubing is then cut at an angle on the front and back for clearance. This will bolt to the lower aileron arm.

At the top of the strut is a fork. The flat steel is bent into a fork, a U shape that is welded to the top of the streamlined tubing. The fork is what the bearing in the top aileron arm will fit between. A bolt will go through the fork and bearing connecting them. Before welding the fork I used a dremel and sanding drums to sculpt the top of the streamline tubing, meticulous and tedious but it allowed me to get the strut exactly where I wanted it.

Once the struts were welded I finally had a complete control system. The next step was to expand the clearance around the struts and aileron hinges by removing bits of the aileron skin until I had good clearance.

Last post I had just installed the aluminum piano hinges that hold the Two cowling halves together. Not Two days later Dave gives me a call and says he found a guy that makes carbon fiber piano hinges, Carbinge. So last week I was able to swap out the aluminum hinges and install the new carbon ones. I have a few pics below. This weekend I cut and notched the top ailerons and was able too get them hung. It was nice to see all the major components coming together. The top ailerons really complete the picture.

Looking Like an Pitts

You have to forgive me, the words are overcome by excitement. Since this project started I have been holstering my excitement knowing just how long of a haul it was going to be. But looking at her standing on her own for the first time, power plant in place, tail, wings, etc. I am left kinda speechless. We still have a long way to go; electronics, firewall forward, covering and paint, etc. But I can’t help to take a breath and enjoy this stage for a few seconds. I hope you enjoy the pics as much.

Looks Whats Coming Home

So tonight we finished up the work on the wings and their time at Daves shop has come to an end. Soon they will be making their trip home where we can do the final prep, cover and paint. There is still a lot of work to do but I am excited to have them a few steps away and to start the long walk down the final stretch that will result in a flying airplane.

This week we glued the leading edges and center section on the top wing. Were on the final stretches will be covering pretty soon.

Top Wing Drag Wires Drilled

Tonight Dave and I went over to Wayne’s and we drilled the drag wire holes. Dave had built a nice jig for drilling the holes the works nicely and guarantees you gonna have good strait holes from spar to spar.

Here are a few pictures of the Jig. We marked the blocks where we wanted the wires to come through, then we tap a pin in to hold the jig. Next we slide the jig onto the pins, tighten them in place and drill the first holes from the inside of the spars with the attachment as our guide. After drilling the inside hole we push a small piece of left over drag wire through to hold the jig from the inside. We remove the pins from the outside and drill the holes from that side. Remove the jig and run the holes all the way through.

Top Wing Progress Continues

Last Saturday 1/2/10 we spent about six hours on the top wing. We cut and glued the spar caps onto the top of the two spars. We built the two false ribs that will /hold the inboard aileron hinge and Sunday we drilled the I Strut bolt holes and sanded the excess glue and sharp edges. The next big steps will be to get the drag and anti-drag wires installed, build the I Struts and install the leading edges. This will allow us to then mate the wings and fuselage so that we can tack on the lower wing attach fittings and build the cabane struts. The Christmas break has really allowed us to make some solid progress in the Top Wing!
