Carbon Tail

The flying tail came out great. When I first spoke to Steve a few years ago he was just working out Sean’s tail so we built mine with the idea I could convert it to his flying tail. Then my good friend Chris had the opportunity to buy Steve Wolfs shop and started Wolf Aircraft Products. So it was time to pull the trigger on the carbon airfoil tail.carbontail1 carbontail2 carbontail3 carbontail4 carbontail5 carbontail6 carbontail7

Looking Like an Pitts

You have to forgive me, the words are overcome by excitement. Since this project started I have been holstering my excitement knowing just how long of a haul it was going to be. But looking at her standing on her own for the first time, power plant in place, tail, wings, etc. I am left kinda speechless. We still have a long way to go; electronics, firewall forward, covering and paint, etc. But I can’t help to take a breath and enjoy this stage for a few seconds. I hope you enjoy the pics as much.

Finishing Up Elevator Controls System

Posted in Empennage, Super Stinker X with tags , , , , , , , on October 20, 2012 by mars58

With the majority of the plumbing done it was time to finish up the control system to the elevators. This took a great attention to detail to make sure everything was level, even and square before we tacked in the control horns to the elevators. With that said we have a total travel of 40 degrees up and 40 degrees down.

Empennage Is Built

Posted in Empennage, Super Stinker X on September 10, 2010 by mars58

Well about 90%, things have been slow on the blog, but not in the shop. The Empennage has so many little parts and pieces from the hinges to the support braces, servo tabs, flying wire attach points, doublers, elevators, rudder and I could go on and on. Something that looks fairly strait forward is truly quite a complex structure. Have a look…

This is starting to get quite exciting. Over the next few weeks we will be mating the top wing, fuselage and bottom wings. This will be the first picture of the major components all assembled for the first time. Then we will be building the Ailerons, installing the control system and test rigging everything. Then the wings come back off, apply the leading edges and aileron coves, seal and cover…

Horizontal Staiblizer

It’s amazing how much work goes into building the empennage. Something, that when done, looks seemingly simple. Not so much… LOL

Continued Work on Rudder and Stabilizer

Things are starting to crank along! There were a lot of pieces to the the rudder and vertical stabilizer. We still have to weld the front attach point up but she is taking shape nicely. Should have the Horizontal Stabs built up in a few days. Stay tuned!

Rudder Takes Shape

We are in a holding pattern waiting for the aileron parts to arrive a couple of weeks to go. Dave decided now was as good a time as any to start the empennage. Last week we cut and bent up the tubes and started on the strap hinges and stiffeners. Last night we laid it out on the table and tacked everything up.
